Terengganu to adopt new economic plan to reduce dependency on oil royalty

KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu will adopt a new economic plan dubbed 'Pelan Penjanaan Pendapatan Baharu Negeri Terengganu' in order to optimise the state's income.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said the plan encompasses seven strategies which would reduce the state's dependence on petroleum and gas royalty income and address the crisis of oil reserve shortages.

"This plan also outline three main objectives: optimising existing state resources, exploring new state resources and seeking new income opportunities, particularly in the green technology and Rare Earth Elements (REE) sectors.

"In the previous term, Terengganu successfully reduced its dependence on royalties by 3 to 4 per cent, and we are optimistic that this can be further reduced with the proposed plan," said Samsuri in his New Year message that was posted on his Facebook page.

He said that for the year 2024, his aspiration is to confront the economic challenges of the next five years together.

"If, in the previous term, I endeavored to transform the mindset of the people of Terengganu with mature and prosperous politics, in the coming term, I will ensure that the people can shift their mindset to change the perception and culture of "just enough" by seizing opportunities in the economic cycle we are about to embark on.

"We need to be prepared and open-minded to undergo a paradigm shift in line with the changing environment."

He said that this task is not easy, and undoubtedly, there will be many challenges.

"However, if we do not initiate it, the results will not materialize, as the saying goes, "berakit-rakit ke hulu, berenang-renang ke tepian, bersakit-sakit dahulu, bersenang-senang kemudian", insya-Allah," said Samsuri.
