'Not right to equate PAS with Taliban'

PETALING JAYA: It is not right to equate PAS with the Taliban or other similar Islamic outfits, says PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.

Taking to Facebook, Samsuri, who is also the Terengganu menteri besar, said that PAS can be considered a “modern” Islamic party.

“Some assume that PAS is a party of extremists and have equated us with other Islamic groups worldwide, such as the Taliban (in Afghanistan). This is 100% untrue.

“We accept that Malaysian society is made up of many races and religions, and believe that PAS has become relevant (to Malaysians),” he said.

Samsuri, who is Kemaman MP, added that PAS was no longer a “kampung party” and had been able to modernise itself and progress with the times.

He also refuted claims that PAS does not have many technocrats. He said the party had members from various fields and backgrounds and that they all play an important role behind the scenes in ensuring the party’s progress.

“I was among this group of party members before I was nominated as a candidate in the 2018 general election,” said the former head of the aerospace department at Universiti Putra Malaysia.

“(PAS) is not a perfect party, but we have members and supporters from various backgrounds that are carrying us forward.”
